Basic Information
6th Grade is the only time to join Orchestra!  The only beginning band, orchestra and chorus classes are offered in 6th grade.  Virtually all students at Lost Mountain choose to join one of these groups, and 6th grade is the only time. Don't miss this opportunity to start on an instrument!

The Orchestra instrument selection includes violin, viola, cello, bass.  The instruments in the Orchestra are very versatile, and can be used in a wide variety of performance situations, including string choir, jazz band, honors orchestra, all-state orchestra, and various other orchestral ensembles! The instrument choices are: Violin, Cello, Viola, Bass.

We will help you find the instrument that fits you best.  We recommend that when you try out an instrument that you like the feel, and the sound of the instrument,   When a student joins orchestra, they are asked to provide four choices of instruments they would like to play.  The directors will evaluate each student to determine which of these instruments is the best fit.  By using this careful process, each student is guided to an instrument that they will be successful with for many years to come!

Previous musical experience is not necessary!  Most orchestra students start with absolutely no formal training playing a musical instrument.  Orchestra classes are taught in a way that students with no previous experience can become successful, while those few students that already play will be challenged and continue to progress.

Orchestra is a class that meets each day at school.  We are fortunate at Lost Mountain that our Orchestra classes meet during school on a daily basis.  For this reason, we are able to make significant progress in a reasonable amount of time, and we do not have to schedule routine rehearsals outside of school hours.  This leaves your time outside of school free to be involved with athletics or other activities.

The Lost Mountain Orchestra is awesome!  The Lost Mountain Orchestra regularly receives awards on not only at the local but at the state!  In 2011 and 2015 we were recognized as one of the top middle school orchestras in the state of Georgia, performing at the Georgia Music Educators' Association Conference.  On a more local level, orchestra students have been selected to play with the GMEA Honors Orchestras and All-State Orchestras!

Lost Mountain Orchestra students go on to become members of the Harrison, Hillgrove High School Orchestras. Middle school orchestra is just the beginning of a very rewarding and exciting activity that many students continue for their entire lives!  At the high school level, both Harrison and Hillgrove High School have outstanding orchestra programs, that compete and perform on the national and international level.
